About Us

Welcome to the German Language Club of South Wales

The German Language Club is an association of three Cardiff groups, each meeting regularly and each have their own particular styles and interests. The German Language Club provides its members with opportunities to share a wealth of knowledge from home and abroad and in particular the cultural and everyday lifestyles of Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Topics cover a wide range of interests, which include music, literature, art, economics, politics, philosophy, science, engineering, the environment and, not least, the ordinary things of everyday life. The presentations and discussions are in German and in an informal style. However, membership is not dependent upon the ability to speak good German, what is more important is the opportunity to practise and learn through the pleasure of German conversation and to enjoy the facilities that are provided. People of all levels of ability are therefore very welcome, and do be assured that the more advanced speakers are always willing to help with translation and explanation.

These groups are based in Cardiff:

The OU (Open University) German Club was founded in 2002 by freelance German language teacher and linguist Michael Harbecke, and is managed by Clive Shakesheff. There is a monthly meeting on a Saturday between 1500 and 1700, at 24 Cathedral Road.

The German Society (Deutsche Gesellschaft) was founded in 1992 by Bill Bryer and Idwal Walters. The is a monthly meeting on a Friday between 1915 and 2100 at the Catholic Chaplaincy, 62 Park Place, CF10 3AS.

The Stammtisch (a table reserved for German speaking regulars) is a very informal social event that takes place every Tuesday evening at the Council Bar in Westgate Street.
